Ministerium für Staatssicherheit
These photographs depict an office environment that is almost prosaic in nature. The lace curtains and 60's style office furniture could be a part of any office anywhere masking the reality of the work of this office. As the headquarters of the East German Stasi, this office was the nerve center of a far reaching department that monitored and terrorized the citizens of East Germany. The built environment, in this instance, works to dilute visual displays of power in contrast to what is commonly understood of Communist architecture especially as expressed in government buildings.
